Shining a Light on Problem Gambling: Awareness, Education, and Support

March is designated as Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM), a time dedicated to increasing public understanding of gambling disorders and promoting available support services. This month is an opportunity for professionals like you—counselors, social workers, and psychologists—to expand your knowledge, identify at-risk clients, and help break the stigma around problem gambling.

Statewide Recognition & Support for PGAM

This year, Governor JB Pritzker, the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS), the Illinois Lottery, and the Illinois Gaming Board (IGB) are recognizing PGAM by highlighting ways the state is working to prevent gambling disorder and support those in need of recovery.

✔️ Teal Illumination: Participating buildings in downtown Chicago will be lit teal (March 25-31) to raise awareness and honor those in recovery.

✔️ Statewide Art Contest: The “Are You Really Winning?” Art Contest showcases the journey of recovery through creative expression. Open to all Illinois residents aged 14 and over.

✔️ Expanded Treatment & Awareness Efforts: IDHS is working with providers statewide to expand outreach, increase screening rates, and improve access to treatment services.

✔️ Illinois Lottery’s Responsible Gaming Commitment: The Illinois Lottery’s 2025 PGAM campaign, "Help and Hope are Here: Call 1-800-GAMBLER," will use radio spots, billboards, and digital outreach to spread awareness.

On March 12th, we’ll release a powerful new video featuring firsthand stories from counselors, social workers, and individuals impacted by problem gambling. Their experiences shine a light on the real impact of gambling disorders and the urgent need for awareness, education, and support.
